Pengertian dan Fungsi Linking Verb

Linking verb adalah verb (kata kerja) yang menghubungkan subject (subjek kalimat) dengan informasi atau deskripsinya yang disebut subject complement.

Subject complement dapat berupa noun (kata benda), pronoun (kata ganti), adjective (kata sifat), atau konstruksi lain yang berperan sebagai noun atau adjective. Kadang-kadang linking verb dapat pula diikuti adverb (kata keterangan) atau prepositional phrase (frasa kata depan).

Berikut contoh penggunaan linking verb “is”.

  • That’s my fault.
    (Itu salah saya.) noun (phrase)
  • That’s mine.
    (Itu milik saya.) pronoun
  • That’s beautiful.
    (Itu cantik.) adjective (phrase)
  • She’s here.
    (Dia disini.) adverb
  • She’s at home.
    (Dia di rumah.) prepositional phrase

Berbeda dengan main verb (kata kerja utama) yang dapat menunjukkan aksi, linking verb hanya sebagai penghubung. Dengan demikian kata kerja ini selalu intransitive karena tidak ada direct object yang menerima aksi.

Macam dan Contoh Kalimat Linking Verb

Linking verbs terdiri dari verb of sensation dan verb of being.

  • act
  • appear
  • be (am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being)
  • become
  • continue
  • grow
  • prove
  • remain
  • seem
  • turn

Linking verb “be” is, am, dan are digunakan pada simple present tense; was dan were pada simple past tense. Be antara lain digunakan sebagai main verb yang didampingi modal auxiliary verb, pada subjunctive dan imperative.

Linking verb bahasa Inggris menghubungkan subjek kalimat dengan deskripsi atau informasi tentang subjek (subject complement).

Contoh Kalimat Linking Verb

  1. My uncle is a headmaster.
    (Paman saya adalah seorang kepala sekolah.) simple present tense
  2. I am from Bandung.
    (Saya dari Bandung.) simple present tense
  3. We were too tired to do any work.
    (Kami terlalu lelah untuk melakukan pekerjaan apa pun.) simple past tense
  4. Be careful.
    (Hati-hati.) imperative
  5. He’ll be fine.
    (Dia akan baik-baik saja.) be setelah modal verb “will” 
  6. Don’t be so hard on yourself.
    (Jangan terlalu keras pada dirimu sendiri.)
  7. She acted so cool but it was just a cover-up.
    (Dia berlaku sangat tenang namun itu hanyalah usaha untuk menutup-nutupi.)
  8. He becomes distant after an argument.
    (Dia menjadi jauh setelah pertengkaran.)
  9. The old man feels lonely.
    (Pria tua itu merasa kesepian.)
  10. Her toilet looks and smells great.
    (Toiletnya terlihat bagus dan harum.)
  11. My voice sounds weird because I’m sick
    (Suara saya terdengar aneh karena saya sedang sakit.)
  12. Chocolate tastes better when you’re hungry.
    (Cokelat terasa lebih enak ketika kamu sedang lapar.)
  13. The first campaign proved unsuccessful.
    (Kampanye pertama terbukti gagal.)
  14. The only thing that remains constant is change.
    (Satu-satunya hal yang tetap konstan adalah perubahan.)
  15. Clean your fireplace before the weather turns cold.
    (Bersihkan perapianmu sebelum cuaca menjadi dingin.)

Linking Verb dan Auxiliary Verb

Am, is, are, was, dan were selain sebagai linking verb dapat pula digunakan pula sebagai auxilliary verb (kata kerja bantu). Bedanya, kata-kata tersebut diikuti verb berupa participle, bukan noun atau adjective.

Contoh Kalimat Linking Verb dan Auxiliary Verb

  • My cat is very affectionate.
    (Kucing saya sangat penyayang.) linking verb diikuti adjective
  • My cat is sleeping on the floor.
    (Kucing saya sedang tidur di lantai.) auxiliary verb diikuti present participle

Action Verb dan Linking Verb

Kebanyakan verb of sensation dan verb of being (kecuali be) dapat pula berperan sebagai action verb dan transitive verb seperti:

  • appear
  • feel
  • grow
  • look
  • prove
  • remain
  • smell
  • sound
  • taste
  • turn

Become dan seem hanya dapat berfungsi sebagai linking verb. Begitu pula dengan “be” tidak bisa sebagai action verb karena “ising, areing, being” bukan sesuatu yang dapat dikerjakan.

Kebanyakan kata kerja pada suatu kalimat (tidak termasuk appear) dapat dideteksi menyatakan action atau tidak dengan cara mensubstitusikan be pada kata kerja tersebut. Jika tampak logis, maka kata kerja tersebut berfungsi sebagai linking verb.

Contoh Action Verb dan Linking Verb

  • This tastes delicious.
    (Ini rasanya lezat.)

    substitusi “is”:

    This is delicious. (Kalimat logis, maka taste merupakan linking verb.)

  • She tasted the soup and added a little more salt.
    (Dia mencicipi sup dan menambahkan sedikit garam.)

    substitusi “was”:

    She was the soup and added a little more salt. (Kalimat tidak logis, maka taste merupakan action verb.)
