Direct – Indirect Object: Pengertian dan Contoh Kalimat

Direct Object (DO)

Pengertian Direct Object

Direct object adalah noun (kata benda), pronoun (kata ganti), atau noun subsitute  pada suatu kalimat yang menerima aksi atau merupakan sasaran dari verb (kata kerja).

Kata kerja tersebut merupakan action verb dan sekaligus transitive verb. Tanpa direct object, kalimat dengan transitive verb menjadi tidak lengkap maknanya atau tidak “make sense”.

Direct object menjawab pertanyaan “whom” atau “what” setelah action verb.

(Saya telah membaca jurnal. –> telah membaca apa?)
  3. She called her mother. –> called whom?
(Dia menelepon ibunya. –> menelepon siapa?)

Noun Substitute sebagai Direct Object

Noun substitute merupakan kata, phrase, atau clause yang dapat berperan sebagai kata benda, dimana antara lain berupa: noun clause, gerund (phrase), dan infinitive (phrase).

Contoh Noun Substitute

  1. I want to know how he fixed my computer.
(Saya ingin tahu bagaimana dia memperbaiki komputer saya.) noun clause
  2. Everybody hates waiting.
    (Semua orang benci menunggu.) gerund
  3. The children are learning to write.
(Anak-anak itu sedang belajar menulis.) infinitive
  4. I hope that he stops his singing.
(Saya harap dia menghentikan nyanyiannya.) gerund phrase
  5. I want to buy the book tomorrow.
(Saya ingin membeli buku itu besok.) infinitive phrase

Mayoritas English sentence menempatkan direct object tepat setelah verb. Namun, ada kalanya indirect object berada diantara keduanya. Penjelasan dan contohnya dapat kamu lihat pada tulisan di bawah.

Indirect Object (IO)

Pengertian Indirect Object

Indirect object adalah noun, pronoun, atau noun substitute yang menerangkan untuk siapa atau apa sesuatu dilakukan oleh action verb. Objek ini menjawab pertanyaan “to/for whom” atau “to/for what”. Suatu kata kerja diikuti indirect object hanya jika memiliki direct object. Kedua objek tersebut selalu orang, tempat, benda, binatang, maupun hal yang berbeda.

Contoh Kalimat Indirect Object

  1. The manager gave him no choice. –> Gave no choice to whom?
(Manager tidak memberi dia pilihan. –> tidak memberi pilihan kepada siapa?)
  2. My uncle donated his salary to charity. –> Donated his salary to what?
(Paman saya mendonasikan gajinya untuk amal. –> donasi gaji dia untuk apa?)

Posisi Indirect Object

Indirect object dapat diletakkan sebelum direct object (diapit dengan verb) maupun setelahnya dengan menambahkan preposition “to” atau “for”. Sebagai informasi, kombinasi antara indirect object dengan preposition tersebut membentuk prepositional phrase.

Contoh Kalimat Indirect-Direct Object

  1. He will tell us all the facts. ≈ He will tell all the facts to us.
(Dia akan mengatakan semua fakta kepada kita.)
  2. My brother paid the woodworker ten dollars to repair his front door. ≈ My brother paid ten dollars to the woodworker to repair his front door.
(Saudaraku membayar tukang kayu sepuluh dollar untuk memperbaiki pintu depannya.)

Penggunaan indirect object dengan preposition khususnya ketika kedua objek tersebut (DO dan IO) berupa pronoun. Tujuannya agar kalimat terdengar natural.

Contoh Kalimat Direct-Indirect Object

  1. Aditya lost his money; therefore, one of his friend lent him it it to him.
(Aditya kehilangan uangnya. Oleh sebab itu satu dari temannya meminjamkan itu untuknya.)
  2. Before Yulia went to London, she informed us it it to us.
(Sebelum Yulia pergi ke London, di menginformasikan itu kepada kami.)

Terus terang saya juga belum tau perbedaannya:

He gave it to his sister.
I’ll explain to you where everything goes.

Who did she address the letter to?
(formal) To whom did she address the letter? http://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/to_1

We often use for to introduce the person or people receiving something:
She bought a teapot for her sister.
Mike Cranham and his staff at the hotel cook for 800 people a day, on average. http://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/for

  6. rama

I want to buy the book tomorrow.

hi mba, mau tanya u/ kalimat di atas.

    I = subjct
    want = trnsitiv verb
to buy = infinitif. tapi kata “buy” nya itukan trmasuk = transitive verb.
    the book = noun,

jadi kata “want” dan “buy” keduanya sama2 transitive verb jd butuh diikuti oleh direct objek. lalu kata the book itu sbagai direct objectnya dari verb “want” ataukah direct object dari verb ” buy” …?

kalau kata ‘the book’ sbgai direct object dari verb “want”. lalu infinitive ” to buy” kedudukannya sbagai apa, mba…??

    tlong pnjelasannya ya mba. hehehe.

    1. Wilma Yulia

      Hello Rama 🙂

the book = direct object of “buy”
to buy the book = direct object of “want”

    2. rama

makasih banyak mba wilma penjelasannya. 😉

1 lg pertanyaan mba. ini saya liat kamus.
I claimed to be a doctor
I want to be happy. knp gak “I want to happy”
      (kenapa to+be)
apakah stiap infinitive yg diikuti noun atau adjective harus ditambah “be”, mba…??
      mohon penjelasannya mba, hehe.

    3. Wilma Yulia

Infinitive kan particle “to” + bare infinitive (base form verb), sedangkan happy adalah adjective dan doctor adalah noun..jadi putus ya ga bisa “to” langsung bersatu sama adjective atau noun hehe…

Bare infinitive ini bisa action verb, bisa stative verb. Jika action verb bisa transitive atau intransitive, jika stative verb contohnya verb “to be” (is, am, are, etc). Yang namanya verb “to be” (sebagai linking verb) itu diikuti noun, adjective, atau konstruksi lain yang berfungsi sebagai noun/adjective 🙂
Gerund, infinitive itu sebutannya “verbal”, dibentuk dari verb dan berfungsi sebagai part of speech lain, namun sifat-sifat verbnya kayak diikuti direct object, adverb, dsb, tetap melekat.

  7. rendy

maaf kak untuk indirect object kalimat ini “My brother paid the woodworker ten dollars to repair his front door.” kalo dijadikan pertanyaan to/for-whom/what, jadinya gimana ya? “paid the woodworker to/for what?” kayaknya agak rancu kalo jawabannya “ten dollars”, bisa bantu jelasin kak?

    1. Wilma Yulia

paid ten dollars to whom? the woodworker

verb + direct object + to whom bukan verb + indirect object + to whom Rendy 😀

paid what to the woodworker? ten dollars juga boleh
