Pengertian Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past perfect continuous tense atau disebut juga past perfect progressive tense adalah suatu bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan suatu aksi (dengan durasi waktu tertentu) telah selesai pada suatu titik waktu tertentu di masa lalu.

Past perfect progressive tense dibentuk dengan auxiliary verb had dan been dan present participle. Secara umum tense ini hanya terjadi pada aksi berupa dynamic atau action verb, tidak stative verb karena umumnya hanya dynamic verb yang memiliki bentuk progressive.

Fungsi dan Contoh Kalimat Past Perfect Continuous Tense

  1. Past perfect progressive tense untuk mengekspresikan aksi yang panjang di masa lampau sebelum aksi lainnya terjadi.

    Contoh Kalimat

    • When the guests came, we had been waiting for an hour.
      (Ketika para tamu datang, kita telah menunggu selama satu jam.)
    • He had been standing in front of the door for thirthy minutes before it was opened.
      (Dia telah berdiri di depan pintu selama tiga puluh menit sebelum dibukakan.)
  2. Tense ini untuk memberitahukan berapa lama sesuatu terjadi (period of time) atau sampai waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

    • She was annoyed since she had been waiting for 2 hours on the bus station.
      (Dia kesal karena telah menunggu selama 2 jam di halte bus.)
    • By the time the teacher came, the students had been reading a half part of the text.
      (Pada waktu guru datang, para siswa telah membaca separuh bagian dari teks.)
    • I had been working with my computer all day, and all I wanted to do was eat some chocolate.
      (Saya telah bekerja dengan komputer sepanjang hari, dan yang ingin saya lakukan adalah makan coklat.)

    • Kamu mau membuat Conditional sentence type 2 atau type 3?
      Gunakan untuk type 2: if + simple past, would + bare infinitive
      type 3:
      Gunakan: if + past perfect, would have + past participle

      Jika tujuan kamu untuk membentuk past perfect continuous tense, saya sarankan tambahkan period of time atau sampai waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

    • Hi Adinda,

      “eat” yang saya gunakan maksudnya infinitive. Kenapa pakai infinitive (tidak gerund), karena membicarakan rencana (pada saat itu). Gerund sering digunakan untuk aksi: real/concrete/completed; Infinitives sering digunakan untuk aksi: unreal/abstract/future.
      Lalu kenapa infinitive-nya tanpa particle “to”? Sebenernya bisa salah satu dari keduanya (“eat” atau “to eat”). Hanya “eat” untuk menghindari redundancy “to” (… all I wanted to do was (to) eat some chocolate). Bisa dibaca pembahasannya: englishforums.com/English/ToDoIsABareInfinitive/xlmk/post.htm

    Ko pake was ya ga pake is ” to do was”

      Kalimat itu memuat past events: “I had been working with my computer all day” dan “all I wanted to do was eat some chocolate”. “Eat” disini merupakan infinitive, yang menyatakan “(berencana) makan” pada masa lampau. Past perfect (continuous) tense biasa digunakan bersama simple past tense (ingin makan) dimana past perfect tense menunjukkan kegiatan yang terjadi terlebih dahulu (telah bekerja sepanjang hari).
