Pengertian Compound Sentence

Compound sentence adalah sentence type (tipe kalimat) yang terdiri dari dua atau lebih independent clause. Pada compound sentence, pikiran pada dua atau lebih independent clause tersebut dihubungkan dengan tingkat kepentingan yang setara.

Memahami berbagai tipe kalimat akan sangat membantu dalam memberikan variasi kalimat pada sebuah tulisan.

Conjunction dan Tanda Baca pada Compound Sentence

Untuk menghubungkan dua atau lebih independent clause di dalam compound sentence, dapat digunakan coordinate conjunction, semicolon (titik koma), dan conjunctive adverb (adverbial conjunction). Walaupun dihubungkan oleh conjunction atau semicolon, masing-masing independent clause tersebut sesungguhnya dapat berdiri sendiri.

1. Coordinate Conjunction

   Coordinate conjunction yang dapat digunakan yaitu:

   • for
   • and
   • nor
   • but
   • or
   • yet
   • so

   Comma (koma) sering digunakan tepat sebelum kata hubung ini.

   Contoh Kalimat Compound Sentence dengan Coordinate Conjunction

   • I like my job and boss, but I’m not paid enough.
     (Saya suka pekerjaan dan atasan saya, tapi saya tidak digaji memadai.)
   • Vina and Amel wake up at 5:00 am, and they go to school at 6:30 am.
     (Vina dan Amel bangun jam 5 dan mereka pergi ke sekolah jam setengah 7.)

   Kadang-kadang coordinate conjunction tidak mampu menunjukkan hubungan yang cukup spesifik/logis dari klausa-klausa yang masing-masing dapat berdiri sendiri tersebut, khususnya conjunction “and”.

2. Semicolon (Titik Koma)

   Semicolon saja dapat digunakan untuk menghubungkan dua independent clause yang sangat berhubungan menjadi satu kalimat.

   Contoh Kalimat Compound Sentence dengan Semicolon

   • It’s mine; it’s not yours.
     (Itu milikku. Itu bukan milikmu.)
   • Diana has a worried look on her face; she’s afraid she wouldn’t find right words to say in the job interview
     (Diana wajahnya tampak khawatir; dia takut tidak dapat menemukan kata-kata yang tepat untuk dikatakan di wawancara kerja itu.)

3. Conjunctive Adverb

   Conjunctive adverb (adverbial conjunction) merupakan  adverb (kata keterangan) atau adverbial phrase yang berguna untuk menghubungkan dua independent clause secara logis.

   • also
   • besides
   • furthermore
   • moreover
   • however
   • in spite of
   • nonetheless
   • nevertheless
   • instead
   • nevertheless
   • on the other hand
   • still
   • accordingly
   • as a result
   • consequently
   • hence
   • so
   • therefore
   • thus
   • afterward
   • at last
   • at the same time
   • meanwhile
   • finally
   • in the meantime
   • then
   • next
   

   contoh kalimat compound sentence dan artinya

   Conjunctive adverb di dalam compound sentence biasanya menempati posisi awal atau akhir independent clause yang kedua. Kata hubung ini ketika berada di awal clause biasanya diikuti comma, sedangkan ketika berada di akhir sering di awali comma.

   awal

   • Independent clause₁; conjunctive adverb +/- , + independent clause₂.
   • Independent clause₁ +/- , + coordinate conjunction + conjunctive adverb + independent clause₂.

   akhir

   Independent clause₁, coordinate conjunction + Independent clause₂ +/- , + conjunctive adverb.

   Contoh Kalimat Compound Sentence

   • I’m not really hungry; however, I want some ice cream.
     (Saya tidak benar-benar lapar. Meskipun demikian, saya ingin es krim.) awal
   • It was a difficult and boring task, but she managed to finish on time nevertheless.
     (Itu merupakan tugas yang sulit dan membosankan, tapi dia berhasil menyelesaikannya tepat waktu meskipun demikian.)
