Penggunaan Other, the Other, dan Another

Other, the other, dan another digunakan untuk menambahkan sesuatu yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya. Pada dasarnya ada dua cara penggunaannya, yaitu: digunakan sebelum noun sebagai determiner atau digunakan sendirian sebagai pronoun.

Other dan the Other

Other/the other dapat digunakan sebagai pronoun maupun adjective. Sebagai pronoun, mereka menggantikan singular noun; sedangkan sebagai adjective, other diikuti plural noun sedangkan the other diikuti singular noun. Other mungkin dapat diikuti singular noun, namun perlu ada determiner lain didepannya. Rumusnya seperti berikut ini.

sebagai pronoun (menggantikan singular noun): the Other / determiner lain + other

the other + singular noun

other + plural noun

determiner lain + other + singular noun

Ketika digunakan sebagai pronoun, other untuk menambahkan noun lain yang terpisah dari ruang lingkup atau group dari noun yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya. Dengan kata pronoun tersebut untuk menggantikan singular unspecific noun. Sebaliknya, the other untuk menambahkan noun lain yang masih berada dalam satu group. Dengan demikian, pronoun tersebut untuk menggantikan singular specific noun.

1. Some people consume coffee regularly. Other people prefer tea.
   (Sebagian orang mengonsumsi kopi secara teratur. Orang lain lebih menyukai teh.)

   (Saya ingin membeli dua mobil. Satu mobil sport, dan yang lainnya SUV.)
5. Tessa has two cats. One of her cats is a Persian, the other cat is a Sphynx.
   (Tessa mempunyai dua kucing. Satu dari kucingnya adalah Persia, kucing yang lain Sphynx.)

Others dan the Others

Others/the others merupakan bentuk plural dari other/the other. Karena tidak ada bentuk plural dari adjective, maka others dan the others hanya berperan sebagai pronoun dari plural noun. Rumusnya adalah sebagai berikut.

1. If you call Anna, I’ll call others.
   (Jika kamu menghubungi Anna, saya akan menghubungi yang lain.)
2. Some students played badminton. Others played basketball.
   (Sebagian siswa main bulu tangkis. Yang lain bermain bola basket.)
3. She has three cats. One of her cats is a Persian, the others are Sphynx.
   (Dia mempunyai tiga kucing. Satu dari kucingnya adalah Persia, yang lainnya sphinx.)
4. I have three brothers. One of my brothers works as an civil engineer, the others work as financial analyst.
   (Saya punya tiga saudara. Satu dari sudara saya bekerja sebagai enjinir sipil, saudara yang lain bekerja sebagai analis keuangan.)

Another

Another dapat digunakan sebagai pronoun maupun adjective. Sebagai pronoun, another menggantikan singular noun.

Another sebagai adjective biasanya diikuti singular noun, namun kata ini dapat pula diikuti plural noun ketika dimaksudkan untuk menambahkan jangka waktu:

• I will give him another three months [=an additional three months] to finish the job. (Saya akan memberinya tambahan tiga bulan untuk menyelesaikan pekerjaan tersebut.)

Contoh Kalimat Another dan Artinya

1. This hat is too big for me. Can I have another?
   (Topi ini terlalu besar untuk saya. Dapatkah saya menggunakan yang lain?)
2. One participant went on to the next challenge. Another participant failed.
   (Satu peserta lanjut ke tantangan berikutnya. Peserta yang lain gagal.)
