Pengertian Yes-No Question

Yes-No question adalah pertanyaan yang membutuhkan jawaban yes (ya) or no (tidak).

Rumus Yes-No Question

Yes-no question dapat dibuat dengan mengubah declarative sentence (statement). Kamu harus tau yang mana subject, main verb (tidak diikuti oleh verb manapun), dan auxiliary verb (primary auxiliary verb/modal). Penjelasan singkatnya adalah sebagai berikut.

• subject

  berupa noun atau pronoun yang merupakan pelaku aksi: Tata, man, Reny and I, they

• main verb

  setelah subject dan tidak diikuti oleh verb lain: be (is, am, are), have, touch, write, work, eat and drink

• helping verb

  sebelum main verb: be (is, am are), have, will, can, may, should

Catatan

Be dapat berupa main verb (linking verb) atau auxiliary verb.

Sekarang mari kita lihat rumus declarative sentence:

S +/- helping verb + main verb

Contoh Declarative Sentence

1. Caca should see the dentist as soon as possible.
   (Kamu harus mendatangi dokter gigi sesegera mungkin.)
2. Zula is kindhearted young man.
   (Zula adalah pria muda yang baik hati.)
3. Your father works hard.
   (Ayahmu bekerja dengan keras)

Yang perlu dilakukan untuk membentuk yes-no question adalah memindahkan helping verb ke depan kalimat, merubah main verb menjadi bentuk dasar (bare infinitive) hanya untuk simple tense, serta menambahkan question mark (tanda tanya) di akhir kalimat:

helping verb  + S + main verb (bare infinitive/present participle/past participle)?

Bare infinitive berlaku untuk kalimat simple present/past/future/past future tense, present participle untuk present/past continuous tense, sedangkan past participle untuk present/past perfect tense.

Jika ada dua auxiliary, hanya yg pertama yang dipindahkan ke depan. Dua atau lebih auxiliary bisa terjadi pada future/past future continuous, future perfect, dan perfect continuous tense.

Contoh Kalimat

1. He has been driving for an hour.
   (Dia sudah mengemudi selama satu jam.) declarative sentence
2. Has he been driving for an hour?
   (Sudahkah dia mengemudi selama satu jam?) yes-no question

Jika kalimat tidak memiliki helping verb dan hanya berupa main verb be, maka:

be (am/is/are/was/were) +S (+ complement) ?

Jika kalimat tidak memiliki helping verb dan bukan main verb be, tambahkan helping verb do di depan kalimat:

do/does/did + S + main verb (bare infinitive)?

Do disini merupakan dummy auxiliary (tidak menambah makna kalimat) namun harus disesuaikan sesuai dengan subject-verb agreement-nya. Do untuk subject jamak (kecuali I dan you yang tetap menggunakan do) pada simple present tense, does untuk subject tunggal pada pada simple present tense, sedangkan did untuk subject tunggal maupun jamak pada simple past tense.

Contoh Yes-No Question (berdasarkan contoh declarative sentence di atas)

1. Should Caca see the dentist as soon as possible? should= helping verb
2. Is Zula kindhearted young man? is= main verb be
3. Does your father work hard? does= dummy auxiliary

Negative Yes-No Question

Seperti affirmative yes-no question, negative yes-no question juga dimulai dengan be atau auxiliary (do, have, will, can, should). Bedanya hanya perlu ditambahkan not setelahnya.

Contoh Negative Yes-No Question

1. Can’t he drive a car?
   (Dia tidak bisa menyetir mobil?)
2. Didn’t you see my sport shoes?
   (Kamu tidak melihat sepatu olahraga saya?)
3. Isn’t the earth flat?
   (Bumi tidak datar?)

1. They are sleeping on the grass.
   (Mereka sedang tidur di atas rumput.)

   Are they sleeping on the grass? are= helping verb

2. Lala has attended the health seminar.
   (Lala telah menghadiri seminar kesehatan tersebut.)

   Has Lala attended the health seminar? has= helping ver

3. He was fat.
   (Dia dulunya gemuk.)

   Was he fat? was=main verb be

4. Only two workers came late.
   (Hanya dua pekerja datang terlambat.)

   Did only two workers come late? did= dummy auxiliary

Rumus dan Contoh Kalimat Yes-No Question pada Berbagai Tense

Berikut beberapa rumus dan contoh kalimat yes-no question pada 12 tense bahasa Inggris.

1. Simple Present Tense
   

   Rumus

   • Do/Does + S + bare infinitive
   • Am/Is/Are + S

   Contoh Kalimat

   • Do you like playing tennis?
     (Apakah kamu suka bermain tenis?)
   • Is she a dermatologist?
     (Apakah dia dokter kulit?)

2. Present Continuous Tense

   Rumus

   Am/Is/Are + S + V-ing (present
   participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Is he making food for his cats?
   (Apakah dia sedang membuat makanan untuk kucing-kucingnya?)

3. Present Perfect Tense

   Rumus

   Have/Has + S + V-3 (past participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Has Tommy been to Balikpapan?
   (Pernahkah Tommy ke Balikpapan?)

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

   Rumus

   Have/Has + S + been + V-ing (present participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Have the passangers been waiting for the next flight since this morning?
   (Apakah para penumpang telah menunggu penerbangan berikutnya sejak pagi ini?)

5. Simple Past Tense

   Rumus

   • Did + S + bare infinitive
   • Was/Were + S

   Contoh Kalimat

   • Did the team work well yesterday?
     (Apakah tim tersebut bekerja dengan baik kemarin?)
   • Were you good at school?
     (Apakah kamu baik di sekolah?)

6. Past Continuous Tense

   Rumus

   Was/Were + S + V-ing (present participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Were your roommate sleeping when I called her?
   (Apakah teman sekamarmu sedang tidur ketika saya meneleponnya?)

7. Past Perfect Tense

   Rumus

   Had + S + V-3 (past participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Had he prepared the room when the guests arrived?
   (Sudahkah dia menyiapkan ruangan ketika para tamu tiba?)

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

   Rumus

   Had + S + been + V-ing (present participle)

   Contoh Kalimat

   Had the students been reading a half part of the text by the time the teacher came?
   (Sudahkah para siswa membaca setengah bagian teks pada saat guru datang?)

9. Simple Future Tense

   Rumus

   • Will + S + bare infinitive
   • Am/Is/Are + S + going to + bare infinitive

   Contoh Kalimat

   • Will he call me later?
     (Apakah dia akan menelepon saya nanti?)
   • Is Diana going to continue doing her work?
     (Apakah Diana akan melanjutkan melakukan pekerjaannya?)

10. Future Continuous Tense

    Rumus

    Will + S + be + V-ing (present participle)

    Contoh Kalimat

    Will you be sleeping at 10 o’clock?
    (Apakah kamu akan sedang tidur jam 10 malam?)

11. Future Perfect Tense

    Rumus

    Will + S + have + V-3 (past participle)

    Contoh Kalimat

    Will the mechanic have repaired my car tomorrow?
    (Apakah mekanik akan telah memperbaiki mobil saya besok?)

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

    Rumus

    Will + S + have been + V-ing (present participle)

    Contoh Kalimat

    Will Yogi have been living in Germany for a year by the end of this month?
    (Apakah Yogi akan telah tinggal di Jerman selama setahun pada akhir bulan ini?)

• is/does/has untuk third person singular (Ana, Tommy, she, he, it)
• was untuk “I” dan third person singular (Ana, Tommy, she, he, it)
• do untuk “I”, “you”, dan plural subject (Ana and Tomi, we, they)
• are/were untuk “you” dan plural subject (Ana and Tomi, we, they)
• have untuk “I”, “you”, dan plural subject (Ana and Tomi, we, they) dan pada future perfect dan future perfect continuous tense tidak terpengaruh gender
• am hanya untuk “I”

Yes-No question merupakan pertanyaan yang meminta jawaban yes (ya) atau no (tidak). Tipe pertanyaan ini dimulai dengan linking verb “be” (am/is/are/was/were), atau auxiliary verb (do, does, did, can, could, may, should, etc).
