Rumus Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Past perfect dan past perfect continuous tense sama-sama dapat digunakan untuk membicarakan aksi-aksi sebelum titik-titik waktu tertentu di masa lampau namun ada sedikit perbedaan antara keduanya.

Past perfect dibentuk dari auxiliary verb “had” dan main verb “past participle” sedangkan past perfect continuous tense dari auxiliary verb “had” dan “been” serta main verb “present participle“.

Fungsi Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

1. past perfect dan past perfect continuous tense secara umum

1. Pada dasarnya past perfect tense untuk membicarakan aksi atau situasi yang telah rampung sebelum aksi atau situasi lainnya di masa lampau, sementara past perfect continuous tense untuk mengungkapkan berapa lama suatu aksi atau situasi yang berlangsung sebelum aksi atau situasi lainnya di masa lampau. Seperti continuous tense yang lain , normalnya past perfect continuous tense tidak menggunakan stative verb, melainkan action verb. Time expression yang sering digunakan pada past perfect tense antara lain: already, just, before, dan when; sedangkan pada past perfect continuous tense adalah before dan when.
   

   Contoh Kalimat Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

   • He had finished his work before he went to bed.
     (Dia telah menyelesaikan pekerjaannya sebelum dia pergi tidur.)
   • The patient had already packed her things when the doctor decided she was ready to go home.
     (Pasien tersebut telah lebih dulu mengemasi barang-barangnya ketika dokter memutuskan bahwa dia siap untuk pulang.)
   • I had been sleeping for a while when a woman knocked on my door and asked for a donation.
     (Saya telah tidur sebentar ketika seorang wanita mengetuk pintu saya dan meminta sumbangan.)
   • The driver had been driving for over six hours before the incident.
     (Pengendara tersebut telah mengemudi selama lebih dari enam jam sebelum insiden tersebut.)
2. Aksi atau situasi yang telah terjadi pada past perfect dan past perfect continuous sebagai informasi mengenai latar belakang dari aksi atau situasi lain di masa lampau.
   

   Contoh Kalimat Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

   • The customer had read those terms and conditions and was fully in agreement.
     (Pelanggan tersebut telah membaca syarat-syarat dan ketentuan itu dan sepenuhnya setuju.)
   • I had been taking driving lessons with a driving instructor for 6 months, so I could pass my driving test quickly.
     (Saya telah mengambil kursus mengemudi dengan seorang instruktur selama 6 bulan, oleh karena itu saya dapat lulus tes mengemudi dengan cepat.)

2. past perfect dan past perfect continuous tense dengan verb tertentu

Tidak ada perbedaan makna yang berarti ketika past perfect dan past perfect continuous tense menggunakan beberapa verb seperti live, play, teach, wear dan work. Keduanya sama-sama mengekspresikan bahwa aksi atau situasi telah berlangsung hingga aksi atau situasi lain di masa lampau.

Contoh Kalimat Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

• Shinta and her husband had lived separately before they moved in together.
  (Shinta dan suaminya telah hidup terpisah sebelum mereka tinggal bersama.)

  atau

  Shinta and her husband had been living separately before they moved in together.

• The teacher had taught English for a year before he applied for a study permit.
  (Guru tersebut telah mengajar bahasa Inggris selama setahun sebelum dia mengajukan permohonan ijin belajar.)

  atau

  The teacher had been teaching English for a year before he applied for a study permit.

3. past perfect dan past perfect continuous tense pada past unreal conditional

Pada third conditional (past unreal) past perfect atau past perfect continuous tense digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kejadian yang diimajinasikan telah terjadi.

Contoh Kalimat Past Perfect dan Past Perfect Continuous Tense

• If I had prepared for the job interview,  I wouldn’t have been nervous.
  (Jika saya telah mempersiapkan diri pada wawancara kerja tersebut, saya tidak akan gugup.)
• If he had been working full time, he would have made $1,000 per month.
  (Jika dia telah bekerja penuh waktu, dia akan telah menghasilkan $1,000 per bulan.)
