Pengertian Declarative Sentence

Declarative sentence adalah sentence type (tipe kalimat) yang digunakan untuk membuat statement (pernyataan), berupa fact (fakta) atau opinion (pendapat). Declarative sentence merupakan tipe kalimat yang paling sering digunakan.

Tipe kalimat declarative sentence menyatakan suatu pikiran yang utuh (complete thought). Untuk membentuk suatu pikiran yang utuh, declarative sentence harus memiliki subject dan predicate berupa verb (kata kerja) atau auxiliary verb + verb dan biasanya dengan tambahan elemen lain seperti direct object, adjective (kata sifat), atau adverb (kata keterangan). Selain itu, tipe kalimat ini diakhiri oleh full stop (titik).

Contoh Kalimat Declarative Sentence

1. This dress is made of cotton.
   (Pakaian ini terbuat dari katun.)
   • subject = this dress
   • predicate = is made of cotton
2. The rain has just stopped.
   (Hujan baru saja berhenti.)
   • subject = the rain
   • predicate = has just stopped
3. Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885.
   (Niels Bohr, seorang ilmuwan dan pesepakbola, dilahirkan di Copenhagen pada tanggal 7 Oktober 1885.)
   • subject = Niels Bohr
   • predicate = was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885
4. I like roasted garlic mashed potatoes.
   (Saya suka kentang tumbuk bawang putih panggang.)
   • subject = I
   • predicate = like roasted garlic mashed potatoes
5. Some audience may agree with the speaker’s opinion.
   (Sebagian hadirin mungkin setuju dengan opini pembicara tersebut.)
   • subject = some audience
   • predicate = may agree with the speaker’s opinion
