Pengertian Comparative Degree

Comparative adalah suatu nama yang diberikan untuk grammar untuk membandingkan dua orang, binatang, benda, atau hal. Comparative degree merupakan the second/middle degree of comparison (derajat perbandingan tingkat kedua) pada adjective dan adverbDegree of comparison yang pertama adalah positive, sedangkan yang ketiga adalah superlative.

Ada dua cara mendasar untuk membandingkan dua hal yaitu dengan menggunakan correlative conjunction as…as atau than. Pada perbandingan dengan menggunakan as…as, tidak ada perubahan bentuk adjective dan adverb yang digunakan atau dengan kata lain adjective dan adverb tetap dalam bentuk standar. Berbeda ketika menggunakan than, adjective atau adverb yang digunakan mungkin telah mengalami perubahan bentuk.

  • He is as brilliant as his sister.
    (Dia sepintar saudaranya.) brilliant (adjective)
  • My brother is more patient than I am.
    (Saudara saya lebih sabar dari saya.) patient (adjective)
  • I find running harder than swimming.
    (Saya pikir berlari lebih sulit dari berenang.) hard (adverb)
  • He doesn’t talk as much as he used to.
    (Dia tidak berbicara sebanyak dulu.) much (adverb)

Bentuk Comparative Degree

Adjective dan adverb mengalami perubahan bentuk ketika digunakan sebagai perbandingan. Pada regular form, perubahan bentuk adjective dan adverb mengikuti pola tertentu. Sebaliknya pada irregular form, perubahan bentuk kata-kata tersebut tidak mengikuti pola tertentu.

Regular Form: Aturan dan Contoh Kalimat Comparative Degree

  1. Adjective dan adverb yang terdiri dari satu suku kata (one syllable) ditambahkan suffix (akhiran) –er. Biasanya terjadi double huruf consonant di ujung kata pada bentuk dasar yang berpola huruf di ujung: consonant-vocal-consonant.
