Pengertian Quantifier

Quantifier adalah kata atau kelompok kata yang digunakan untuk menyatakan jumlah (how many atau how much).

Bentuk quantifier mungkin simple hanya terdiri dari satu kata (contoh: few, little, many), atau complex berupa frasa (contoh: a lot of, none of, a couple of).

Quantifier umumnya digunakan sebagai determiner yang berfungsi membatasi noun. Posisinya di depan noun membentuk noun phrase. Namun, quantifier dapat pula berdiri sendiri sebagai pronoun, tepatnya indefinite pronoun.

Contoh Quantifier:

Fungsi	Contoh
Determiner	few workers (sedikit pekerja) Keterangan: few = determiner = modifier kata benda “workers”
Pronoun	Few come on time. (Sedikit yang datang tepat waktu.) Keterangan: few = pronoun = subjek kalimat

Kombinasi Quantifier dengan Noun

Sebagian quantifier dapat menambahkan informasi baik countable maupun uncountable noun, sedangkan sebagian yang lain menambahkan informasi hanya countable atau uncountable noun.

1. quantifier + countable / uncountable noun

   some, any, enough, a lot of, lots of, most, most of the, plenty of, all of the, lack of

   Contoh Kalimat Quantifier dan Artinya

   • Would you mind giving me some advice?
     (Maukah kamu memberi saya beberapa nasehat?)
   • Some students prefer to learn on their own for the exam, while others do not.
     (Beberapa siswa lebih suka belajar sendiri untuk ujian sedangkan yang lain tidak.)
   • There’re not enough chairs for uninvited guests.
     (Disana tidak ada cukup kursi untuk tamu yang tidak diundang.)
   • Do you have enough money?
     (Apakah kamu punya cukup uang?)
   • She has a lot of cats.
     (Dia mempunyai banyak kucing.)
   • Do you need a lot of sugar?
     (Apakah kamu membutuhkan banyak gula?)

2. quantifier + countable noun

   a few, few, several, a couple of, many, none of

   Contoh Kalimat Quantifier dan Artinya

   • He has a few ties.
     (Dia mempunyai sedikit dasi.)
   • None of his sport shoes is in a good condition.
     (Tidak satupun sepatu olahraganya dalam kondisi layak.)
   • Several people rented the car.
     (Beberapa orang menyewa mobil itu.)

3. quantifier + uncountable noun

   a little, little, not much, a great deal of, a good deal of, a bit of, no

   Contoh Kalimat Quantifier dan Artinya

   • Ria has a little money in her pocket.
     (Ria punya sedikit uang di kantongnya.)
   • I don’t have much money in this time.
     (Saya tidak punya banyak uang saat ini.)
   • You need a great deal of money to buy a lamborghini car.
     (Kamu membutuhkan uang yang banyak untuk membeli sebuah mobil lamborghini.)

Floating Quantifier

Normalnya quantifier berada di depan noun yang dibatasinya (membentuk noun phrase). Namun ada beberapa yang dapat pindah dari posisi tersebut dan menempati berbagai posisi di dalam kalimat. Sebutan untuk quantifier semacam itu adalah floating quantifier, sedangkan aturan yang menyatakan berbagai posisi yang dapat dimiliki quantifier disebut quantifier floating.

All, both, dan each merupakan floating quantifier dengan syarat noun yang dibatasinya merupakan definite noun (jelas yang dimaksudkan).

Berbagai Posisi Quantifier yang Mungkin

1. normal

   All the students look bored.

   sebelum verb / setelah noun

   The students all look bored.

   setelah verb

   The students look all bored.

2. normal

   Both the staff should learn to ask for help.

   setelah auxiliary verb yang pertama (jika > 1)

   The staff should both learn to ask for help.

3. normal

   The teacher asked [all of her students to read the text].
   [] = complement, dengan all of her students sebagai subject-nya

   sebelum verb / setelah noun

   The teacher asked her students all to read the text.

   memisahkan infinitive

   The teacher asked her students to all read the text.

4. normal

   I love both of them.

   sebelum verb / setelah noun

   I love them both.

5. normal

   All of my friends are overweight.

   sebelum verb / setelah noun

   My friends all are overweight. (“of” dihilangkan)

   setelah verb

   My friends are all overweight. (“of” dihilangkan)

6. normal

   Each of his cats enjoys eating crackers.

   sebelum verb / setelah noun

   His cats each enjoys eating crackers.

   setelah verb

   His cats enjoys each eating crackers.
