Pengertian Afraid dan Scared
Afraid dan scared adalah adjective (kata sifat) untuk mengekspresikan kekhawatiran atau ketakutan dengan tingkatan yang kira-kira sama sehingga mungkin dapat dipertukarkan (interchangeably). Meskipun demikian, ada perbedaan penggunaan diantara keduanya.
Beberapa Penggunaan dan Contoh Kalimat Afraid dan Scared
- Afraid dan scared sama-sama dapat diikuti:
- of + noun
- of + gerund
- to + infinitive
- that + clause
Contoh Kalimat Afraid dan Scared
- She’s afraid/scared of fierce dogs.
(Dia takut anjing galak.) - We are sometimes afraid/scared of making wrong decisions.
(Kita kadang-kadang takut membuat keputusan-keputusan yang salah.) - Don’t be afraid to tell the truth.
(Jangan takut untuk mengungkapkan kebenaran.) - My little sister seems too scared to sleep alone and in the dark.
(Adik perempuan saya tampak terlalu takut untuk tidur sediri dan dalam gelap.) - I was afraid that he might lose his job.
(Saya takut dia mungkin kehilangan pekerjaannya.)
- Scared dapat diikuti by “something”, tapi afraid tidak.
Contoh Kalimat Scared
They were scared by the raging storm.
(Mereka takut pada badai yang mengamuk tersebut.) - Afraid normalnya tidak digunakan sebelum noun (sebagai attributive adjective), melainkan setelah verb (sebagai predicative adjective). Berbeda dengan afraid, scared dapat menempati kedua posisi tersebut.
Contoh Kalimat Scared
She has no idea how to comfort a scared child.
(Dia tidak tahu bagaimana menenangkan anak yang ketakutan.) attributive adjective - “I’m afraid…” dapat berarti “Saya menyesal harus mengatakan padamu bahwa…” sebagai kata-kata pembuka berita buruk dengan lembut dan sopan.
Contoh Kalimat Afraid
I’m afraid you aren’t quite old enough to be a police officer.
(Saya menyesal harus mengatakan padamu bahwa kamu belum cukup umur untuk menjadi polisi.) - “I’m afraid so.” dan “I’m afraid not” sebagai short answer untuk mengonfirmasi berita buruk.
Contoh Kalimat Afraid
- Do you have to work this weekend? I’m afraid so.
(Apakah kamu harus bekerja akhir pekan ini? Sayangnya saya rasa demikian.) - Can I expect any significant changes in the oil policy soon? I’m afraid not.
(Dapatkah saya mengharapkan perubahan yang signifikan pada kebijakan minyak tersebut dalam waktu dekat? Sayangnya saya rasa tidak.)
