Could / Was Able to: Talking about Ability

Could dan was able to sama-sama dapat digunakan untuk membicarakan kemampuan (talking about ability) di masa lampau. 

Could merupakan modal auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu)
yang diikuti main verb (kata kerja utama) berupa bare infinitive (infinitive tanpa “to”), sedangkan was able to bukan. Was (atau were untuk subjek jamak atau “you”) sendiri sudah merupakan main verb. Keduanya mungkin dapat saling menggantikan, namun mungkin juga tidak.

Penggunaan Could dan Was Able to

Walaupun sama-sama dapat digunakan pada simple past tense, ada perbedaan dalam penggunaan could dan was able to. Could cenderung digunakan untuk menyatakan kemampuan secara umum, sedangkan was able to pada situasi tertentu di masa lampau. Adapun couldn’t dapat digunakan pada situasi tertentu di masa lampau seperti wasn’t able to.

Contoh Kalimat Could/Was (Were) Able to

Could Having Asperger syndrome suferer, Ben could talk at 18 months and read by 3 years.
(Mempunyai sindrom Asperger, Ben dapat berbicara pada usia 18 bulan dan membaca sebelum 3 tahun.)
He could write a 1,000 word essay in a day when he was a freshman.
(Dia dapat menulis essay seribu kata dalam sehari ketika dia kuliah tingkat satu.)
Was Able to How were you able to handle that situation?
(Bagaimana kamu mengatasi situasi itu?)
I bought a new computer because my old one broke and none was able to fix it.
(Saya membeli komputer baru karena yang lama rusak dan tidak seorangpun dapat memperbaikinya.)
Couldn’t / Wasn’t Able to My father wasn’t able to / couldn’t pick me up yesterday.
(Ayah tidak bisa menjemput saya kemarin.)

Kata kerja yang menyatakan sense (indera) atau mental process: see, feel, hear, smell, tastebelieve, decide, remember, dan understand. normalnya digunakan bersama could meskipun untuk membicarakan kemampuan pada situasi tertentu di masa lampau.

Contoh Kalimat Could

1 I could understand why he refused to accept the offer.
(Saya dapat memahami mengapa dia menolak menerima tawaran tersebut.)
2 She could smell that the bread was burning.
(Dia dapat mencium roti yang sedang dibakar itu.)
