Pengertian Present Continuous Tense

Present continuous tense atau present progressive tense adalah bentuk kata kerja yang digunakan untuk menyatakan aksi yang sedang berlangsung sekarang (present) atau rencana di masa depan (future). Karena dapat digunakan pada present atau future, tense ini sering diiringi adverbial of time untuk memperjelasnya.

Rumus

Present continuous dibentuk dengan auxiliary verb “be”, berupa is/am/are – karena present tense (waktu sekarang),  dan present participle (-ing).

Is digunakan pada subject berupa singular noun (seperti: Tita, book) dan third person singular pronoun (seperti: she, he, it); are pada plural noun (seperti: boys, men, books), plural pronoun (seperti: we, they) dan you; sementara am pada I.

Umumnya tense ini hanya terjadi pada aksi berupa dynamic atau action verb, tidak stative verb. Mengapa begitu? karena secara umum hanya dynamic verb yang memiliki bentuk continuous.

Kalimat negatif dapat langsung dibuat dengan menambahkan “not” setelah “be” am/is/are, sementara kalimat interrogatif (yes-no question) dibentuk dengan menukar posisi subject of verb (S) dan be.

S + be (am/is/are) + not + present participle (-ing)

Contoh Kalimat Negative – Present Continuous Tense

1. I am writing a letter.
   (Saya sedang menulis surat.)

   I am not writing a letter. / I‘m not writing a letter.
   (Saya tidak sedang menulis surat.)

2. They are counting votes.
   (Mereka sedang menghitung suara.)

   They are not counting votes. / They aren’t counting votes.
   (Mereka tidak sedang menghitung suara.)

3. He is sleeping.
   (Dia sedang tidur.)

   He is not sleeping. / He isn’t sleeping.
   (Dia tidak sedang tidur.)

4. It is snowing here.
   (Sedang turun salju disini.)

   It is not snowing here. / It isn’t snowing here.
   (Tidak sedang turun salju disini.)

5. She is working on the project at the moment.
   (Dia sedang mengerjakan proyek tersebut saat ini.)

   She is not working on the project at the moment. / She isn’t working on the project at the moment.
   (Dia tidak sedang mengerjakan proyek tersebut saat ini.)

6. We are going out tonight.
   (Kami akan keluar malam ini.)

   We are not going out tonight.
   (Kami tidak akan keluar malam ini.)

7. He is wearing his glasses today.
   (Dia memakai kacamatanya hari ini.)

   He is not wearing his glasses today.
   (Dia tidak memakai kacamatanya hari ini.)

Contoh Kalimat Yes-No Question Present Continuous Tense

1. I’m still growing physically at the age of 19.
   (Saya masih tumbuh secara fisik di umur 19 tahun.)

   Am I still growing physically at the age of 19?
   (Apakah saya masih tumbuh secara fisik di umur 19 tahun?)

2. You are reading a controversial book.
   (Kamu sedang membaca buku yang kontroversial.)

   Are you reading a controversial book?
   (Apakah kamu sedang membaca buku yang kontroversial?)

3. She is working hard.
   (Dia sedang bekerja dengan keras.)

   Is she working hard?
   (Apakah dia sedang bekerja dengan keras?)

4. They are laying on my bed.
   (Mereka sedang berbaring di tempat tidur saya.)

   Are they laying on my bed?
   (Apakah mereka sedang berbaring di tempat tidur saya?)

Contoh Short Answer Response Present Continuous Tense

1. Am I arriving early? / Are we arriving early?
   • Yes, you are.
   • No, you aren’t.
2. Is she/he/it arriving early?
   • Yes, she/he/it is.
   • No, she/he/it isn’t.
3. Are you arriving early?
   • Yes, I am.
   • No, I’m not.
4. Are they arriving early?
   • Yes. they are.
   • No, they aren’t.

Fungsi dan Contoh Kalimat Present Continuous Tense

1. Present continuous untuk membicarakan suatu aksi yang sedang terjadi sekarang. Time expression (keterangan waktu) yang dapat digunakan antara lain:
   • now (sekarang)
   • at the moment (saat ini)
   • over the holidays (selama hari libur)

   Contoh Kalimat

   • She is brushing the bathroom floor.
     (Dia sedang menyikat lantai kamar mandi.)
   • I‘m driving a car to Bandung now.
     (Saya sedang mengendarai mobil ke Bandung sekarang.)
   • He‘s learning English in order to be a great guide.
     (Dia sedang mempelajari Bahasa Inggris agar menjadi pemandu wisata yang hebat.)
   • I‘m living with my sister at the moment.
     (Saya tinggal dengan saudara perempuan saya saat ini.)
2. Tense ini untuk membicarakan suatu rencana atau perpindahan ke suatu tempat/kondisi. Keterangan waktu yang dapat digunakan antara lain:
   • on Sunday (pada hari Minggu)
   • at nine o’clock on Sunday (pada pukul sembilan hari Minggu)
   • next week/month (minggu/bulan depan)
   • this month (bulan ini)

   Contoh Kalimat

   • I’m spending my holiday on Kuta beach next month.
     (Saya sedang menghabiskan liburan di pantai Kuta akhir bulan depan.)
   • You can’t call me this night. I’m going to my best friend’s wedding.
     (Kamu tidak dapat menghubungi saya malam ini. Saya akan pergi ke pernikahan sahabat saya.)
   • The buses are arriving in an hour.
     (Bus-bus tersebut tiba dalam satu jam.)
   • I‘m moving to West Jakarta this month.
     (Saya pindah ke Jakarta Barat bulan ini.)
3. Present progressive tense untuk mengungkapkan kejengkelan atas aksi yang terjadi berulang kali.
   

   Contoh Kalimat

   • Why is the wild dog always barking at me?
     (Mengapa anjing liar itu selalu menggonggong pada saya?)
   • I‘m getting sick of you always asking the same questions.
     (Saya mulai muak dengan kamu yang selalu menanyakan pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang sama.)
   • My boss is always yelling at me and complaining about everything.
     (Bos selalu meneriaki saya dan mengeluh tentang segala hal.)
