Principal / Principle: Pengertian, Contoh Kalimat, dan Soal

Pengertian dan Penggunaan Principal dan Principle

Principal dan principle adalah homophone, yaitu kata-kata yang pelafalannya (sound) sama namun artinya (meaning) berbeda. Karena pelafalan yang sama itulah penggunaan kata-kata ini rentan tertukar.

Principal dapat berfungsi sebagai noun (kata benda) atau adjective (kata sifat). Sebagai noun bermakna “the person in charge of:

  • [UK] a  college or university
  • [US] a school,

sedangkan sebagai adjective “most important, main” (paling penting, utama) dengan posisi attributive (sebelum noun).

Berbeda dengan principal, principle selalu noun, tidak pernah adjective. Maknanya “a basic truth” (prinsip dasar) atau “a moral rule or belief that influences  one’s behavior” (aturan moral atau keyakinan yang mempengaruhi perilaku seseorang).
