Pengertian Controlling Idea

Controlling idea adalah ide atau opini penulis (writer) mengenai topik suatu topic sentence. Ide tersebut membantu pembaca (reader) memahami tujuan penulis menulis suatu paragraph dimana setiap kalimat di dalam paragraph berhubungan dengan ide tersebut, baik langsung ataupun tidak langsung.Controlling idea yang baik akan membangkitkan rasa ingin tahu pembaca, membuat mereka ini mengajukan pertanyaan.

Controlling idea mungkin dapat dieskpresikan dalam adjective (kata sifat) atau adjective phrase (frasa kata sifat) seperti:

  • easy
  • difficult
  • good
  • bad
  • wrong
  • healthy
  • unhealthy
  • well-finished
  • easy to read
  • difficult to learn
  • better than chocolate
  • most independent

Controlling idea mungkin dapat pula berupa noun phrase seperti:

  • unusual experiences
  • happiest time of my life
  • several ways
  • many reasons
  • two groups
  • three aims
  • three classes
  • five steps
  • three major factors
  • four most common causes
  • these effects
  • four adventages

Berikut beberapa contoh controlling idea (bold) di dalam topic sentence.

  1. Today I had a horrible exprience with email support.
    (Hari ini saya mengalami pengalaman yang sangat buruk dengan layanan email.) What experience did you have? Why was it horrible?
  2. It is difficult to learn tennis and table tennis at the same time.
    (Sulit untuk belajar tenis dan tenis meja dalam waktu bersamaan.)
    Why is it difficult?
  3. Microwave ovens are easy to use.
    (Microwave oven mudah digunakan.) Why they are easy to use?
  4. Fish can be classified into three groups.
    (Ikan dapat diklasifikasikan ke dalam tiga kelompok.) What are the three groups of fish?
  5. Being stubborn is not always a bad thing.
    (Menjadi keras kepala tidak selalu sesuatu yang buruk.) Why is it not always a bad thing?
  6. People who try new things are happier than those who don’t for some reasons.
    (Orang-orang yang mencoba hal-hal baru lebih bahagia daripada yang tidak untuk beberapa alasan.) Why they are happier?
