Materi Yes-No Question

Yes-No question merupakan pertanyaan yang meminta jawaban yes (ya) atau no (tidak). Tipe pertanyaan ini dimulai dengan linking verb “be” (am/is/are/was/were), atau auxiliary verb (do, does, did, can, could, may, should, etc).

Contoh Soal Yes-No Question

Berdasarkan declarative sentence (statement) di bawah ini, pilihlah yes-no question yang tepat.

1. He may qualify for the position.

   1. Does he may qualify for the position?
   2. May he qualify for the position?

2. Jusuf Kalla was the 10th Vice President of Indonesia.

   1. Was Jusuf Kalla the 10th Vice President of Indonesia?
   2. Did Jusuf Kalla be the 10th Vice President of Indonesia?

3. Veralia likes swimming.

   1. Does Veralia like swimming?
   2. Does Veralia likes swimming?

4. The passengers have been waiting for thirty minutes.

   1. Have been the passengers waiting for thirty minutes?
   2. Have the passengers been waiting for thirty minutes?

5. A person can’t drive a car on public roads without a driver’s license.

   Negative yes-no question?

   1. Can’t a person drive a car on public roads without a driver’s license?
   2. Can a person not drive a car on public roads without a driver’s license?

6. All the graduate students have finished their dissertation.

   1. Have all the graduate students finish their dissertation?
   2. Have all the graduate students finished their dissertation?

7. Aldo came late yesterday.

   1. Did Aldo came late yesterday?
   2. Did Aldo come late yesterday?

8. They were so naughty.

   1. Did they so naughty?
   2. Were they so naughty.

9. The children are having their lunch now.

   1. Do The children have their lunch now?
   2. Are the children having their lunch now?

10. He will be working out at the gym tomorrow morning.

    1. Will he be working out at the gym tomorrow morning?
    2. Will be he working out at the gym tomorrow morning?

1. b. May he qualify for the position? | Declarative sentence punya may (auxiliary verb). Gunakan rumus: auxiliary verb + S + main verb (bare infinitive) … ?
2. a. Was Jusuf Kalla the 10th Vice President of Indonesia? | Declarative sentence punya was (linking verb “be”). Gunakan rumus: be (am/is/are/was/were) + S + complement?
3. a. Does Veralia like swimming? | Karena declarative sentence tidak punya auxiliary maupun linking verb, maka untuk membentuk yes-no question dibutuhkan dummy auxiliary (do/does/did). Gunakan rumus: do/does/did + S + main verb (bare infinitive) … ?
4. b. Have the passengers been waiting for thirty minutes? | Ada dua auxiliary verb (have, been) pada declarative sentence ini. Hanya yg pertama yang dipindahkan ke awal kalimat.
5. a. Can’t a person drive a car on public roads without a driver’s licence? | Pada negative yes-no question, not langsung ditambahkan setelah linking verb “be” atau auxiliary verb.
6. b. Have all the graduate students finished their dissertation? | Declarative sentence merupakan kalimat present perfect tense. Dengan demikian memiliki auxiliary verb have. Gunakan rumus: auxiliary verb + S + main verb (past participle) … ?
7. b. Did Aldo come late yesterday? | Declarative sentence hanya punya main verb came (tanpa auxiliary maupun linking verb). Dengan demikian diperlukan dummy auxiliary (do/does/did). Gunakan rumus: do/does/did + S + main verb (bare infinitive) … ?
8. b. Were they so naughty? | Declarative sentence punya were (linking verb “be”). Gunakan rumus: be (am/is/are/was/were) + S + complement?
9. b. Are the children having their lunch now? | Declarative sentence (present continuous tense) punya are (auxiliary verb). Gunakan rumus: auxiliary verb + S + main verb (present participle) … ?
10. a. Will he be working out at the gym tomorrow morning? | Hanya auxiliary verb yg pertama (will) yang dipindahkan ke awal kalimat.
