Pengertian dan Penggunaan Loose dan Lose

Loose dan lose merupakan kata-kata yang kerap menimbulkan kebingungan banyak orang. Kekeliruan dalam penggunaan dua kata ini tidak hanya dialami banyak orang yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing, melainkan juga native speaker yang kadang perlu berpikir dua kali ketika hendak menggunakannya. Spelling (ejaan) dua kata ini mirip, namun pronounciation (pelafalan) dan maknanya berbeda.

Lose /luz/ adalah irregular verb (kata kerja tidak beraturan) yang bermakna “fail to win” (gagal menang), “be unable to find” (tidak dapat menemukan), atau “fail to keep” (gagal menjaga/mempertahankan) yang membicarakan aksi; sementara loose /lus/ adalah adjective yang berarti “not tight fitting” (tidak ketat), “not fixed” (tidak tetap, tetap, atau kaku), “not fastened” (tidak diikat) atau “relaxed” (santai) untuk mendeskripsikan sesuatu. Tampak bahwa part of speech (kelas kata) dua kata ini pun berbeda.

Kata kerja lose yang mempunyai Z sound ini bentuk past tense-nya lost dan present participle-nya losing. Orang umumnya membuat kesalahan dengan present participle dari lose dengan membuat double “o” menjadi loosing. Padahal tidak ada kata semacam itu.
