Pengertian dan Penggunaan Accept dan Except

Accept dan except adalah dua kata yang sangat mirip dalam pengucapan ending-nya, namun maknanya sangat berbeda, hampir bertolak belakang. Dua kata ini kerap membingungkan banyak orang dalam penggunaannya.

Dalam modern Englishaccept (ek-sept) hanya berfungsi sebagai verb. Berbeda dengan except (ik-sept) yang dapat berfungsi sebagai preposition dan conjunction juga. Sebagai verb,  accept bermakna “to receive” (menerima), sedangkan except (ik-sept) bermakna “to exclude” (mengecualikan, meniadakan). Penggunaan except sebagai verb lebih jarang daripada sebagai dua part of speech lainnya. Biasanya pada formal context.

Sebagai prepositionexcept bermakna “but” (kecuali), sedangkan sebagai conjunction kata ini bermakna “unless” (jika tidak).
